Split Cake Layers with Floss

Daily Kitchen Note

Slicing cake layers with a knife can result in uneven cuts and torn crumbs. Using unflavored dental floss provides a clean, even cut without compressing the delicate cake structure.

How to Saw with floss

  1. Measure the height where you want to split the cake and insert toothpicks around the perimeter as a guide.
  2. Wrap a long piece of unflavored dental floss around the cake, resting it on the toothpicks.
  3. Cross the ends of the floss in front of you.
  4. Gently pull the ends in opposite directions, allowing the floss to saw through the cake evenly.
  5. Carefully lift off the top layer.

Why it works

The thin, strong profile of dental floss cuts through the cake crumb smoothly without the friction or downward pressure of a knife blade, preventing squishing or tearing.
